Up in the hills outside Nice the Matisse Chapel, the Chapelle du Rosaire, is a wonder. Designed entirely by the artist, the interior stained glass windows are in his cut-out style and full of the vivid colors and plant forms of which he was so fond. He even designed robes worn by the priest who says Mass.

As you can see from the sign, it was open when we were there on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 am to 1 pm and 2 pm to 5 pm. One Mass was said on Sundays at 10 am. However, with 48 hours notice, an appointment could be made to visit at another time.

Chariots of fire! We said goodbye to the Matisse chapel and flew back home. What a wonderful trip!

In between trips to France, I had been taking classes in French at Alliance Française in St Louis. Founded in 1883 by Louis Pasteur, Jules Verne and other French notables for the teaching of French language and culture outside of France, Alliance Française is where I finally learned to speak French.
